Checked against TSBPE records
A Plumbing Inspector reviews plumbing work to confirm it meets code, typically as an employee or contractor for a city, county, or other political subdivision — and TSBPE requires that the inspector have no financial interest in a plumbing company while holding this license. Municipalities rely on this credential to know their inspectors are actually qualified plumbers, not just code-familiar staff. Unlike every other TSBPE license type, a Plumbing Inspector's license doesn't renew on the anniversary of when it was issued — it always renews in January, regardless of issue date. That fixed date makes it easy to track, but also easy to forget if it doesn't line up with when the license was first picked up.
The license runs on a one-year cycle and, per TSBPE's rule covering all its licensees, requires 6 hours of continuing professional education (CPE) each cycle. A late renewal costs $27.50 within 90 days of expiration and $55 beyond that. TSBPE's two-year cutoff applies here too: an inspector's license expired more than two years can't be renewed and has to be reinstated instead, which means re-registering as a Plumber's Apprentice and passing every exam the license currently requires — a steep professional step down for someone who was reviewing other people's plumbing work. Because the renewal date doesn't move with the calendar year the inspector was hired, it's worth marking January specifically rather than relying on a hire-date reminder.
